The Vancouver Food Cooperative has begun selling shares!

As most folks who have been around for a while know, most natural food cooperatives were started thirty years ago, but with growing concerns about regional food security, there is a third wave of co-ops emerging around the nation, including one right here in Vancouver, USA!

Please visit the web site, consider joining their announcement list or subscribing to http://weblog.VancouverFood.org and help bring a community-owned, natural foods grocery to Vancouver. We can own it!

Friends of Trees Plantings in Vancouver

For folks who are not familiar, Friends of Trees is a local organization which helps people to plant street trees (among other things). Recently they posted their schedule for the next few months and it includes several plantings in Vancouver, including many of the downtown neighborhoods such as Arnada, Lincoln and Hough. This is a terrific, low-commitment thing to do with your family or neighbors and good practice for planting other trees in your own yard!

January 20: Cascade SE, Cascade Highlands, Mountain View, Fishers Landing and Bennington
February 17: Burnt Bridge Creek, Image and North Image neighborhoods
March 17: in Lincoln, Rose Village (Rosemere), Hough, Arnada and Carter Park

More info and details at http://www.friendsoftrees.org/events/planting.php

New I-5 Bridge

The Columbia River Crossing is a multi-multi-year project to look at improving traffic flow near the Interstate Bridge, from SR-500 to Columbia Blvd along I-5. They've been looking at several options and seem to have narrowed it down, with upcoming hearings on proposals to replace the current bridge with another eight or ten lanes wide that would be tall enough not to need frequent bridge lifts and low enough not to close down Pearson Air Park. They are planning a series fo community meetings around this that might be of interest to folks who use that bridge. More details of the meetings are available at http://columbiarivercrossing.org/eventCalendar.aspx

For Vancouver folks interested in cheaper and more sustainable transportation options in the region, this is definitely a project to keep an eye on.

Consumer skips grocery store to get food off the grid: Monique Dupre buys direct from farms and makes her own staples to save money
by Leslie Cole, The Oregonian, Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Twenty-nine-year-old Monique Dupre wears boot-cut jeans, lives in a tidy Vancouver bungalow and looks like any young mom you'd see pushing a shopping cart -- except that she almost never does.

Instead, she spends her food dollars off the grocery grid. And she's saving a bundle: Dupre, husband Anthony and daughters Celia, 6, and Solenne, 3, eat for about $65 a week

Downtown Fun Sat December 1, 2007

There are a few cool things going on in downtown Vancouver this Saturday, December 1, 2007.

10am-4pm admission to the Clark County Historical Museum is free, As part of their annual open house. The museum is in the old Carnegie Library at 1511 Main St and the current exhibit (Vancouver Uncovered) closes at the end of the month. As part of the open house there are usually craft activities for kid and artsy things to buy if you are so inclined. More info at http://www.cchmuseum.org/

4-8pm is the downtown "Sip 'N Stroll" event, with musicians in some of the downtown businesses. Anyone is free to wander around and listen to the music, but to help raise money for the downtown holiday lights and Habitat for Humanity they also have armbands available for $5 and $25 which entitle one to store discounts and wine of some sort. Details on this are at http://UptownVillage.com with tickets at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/producerevent/23791?prod_id=6276

6pm at Hudson's Bay High School is the Police Activity League's annual boxing fundraiser, "Battle at the Bay." I'm not sure of the ticket cost, but it is usually less than $10 (maybe less than $6) with the proceeds going to help fund athletic activities for kids under the volunteer supervision of the Vancouver Police Department.

I'm going to try to catch all three, but I'm funny that way.

Is anyone else bothered by the new type of housing that is being stuffed in between the existing houses around here? I just saw 3 condos stuffed into what was once the side yard of an older craftsman-style home, and they are actually being SOLD.

My question is this; who buys this type of house, and are the buyers the actual people going to live there? Or are these just cheepo rental units that are being sold to real-estate moguls as rental property?

Vancouver History

After a rousing day of preparing to tear off a roof, I decided to sit down and procrastinate by adding a bit to the Wikipedia article on the first Vancouver at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver%2C_Washington

The history section was greatly expanded, and a section on notable buildings added, both below.

HISTORY

Before the Lewis and Clark expedition camped in the area in 1806 , the area was inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Chinook and the Klickitat, whose name for the area was Ala Si Kas or "land of the mud-turtles". Lewis wrote that it was "the only desired situation for settlement west of the Rocky Mountains." The first permanent European settlement did not occur until 1824, when Fort Vancouver was established as a fur trading post of the Hudson's Bay Company. From that time on, the area was settled by both the US and Britain under a "joint occupation" agreement. Joint occupation ended on June 15, 1846, with the signing of the Oregon Treaty, which gave the United States full control of the area. The City of Vancouver was incorporated on January 23, 1857.

Based on an act in the 1859-1860 legislature, Vancouver was briefly the capital of the Washington Territory, before being returned to Olympia, Washington by a 2-1 ruling of the territory's supreme court, in accordance with Isaac Stevens' preference and concern that proximity to Oregon might give its southern neighbor undue influence.

U.S. Army Captain (and future President) Ulysses S. Grant served at what was then known as Columbia Barracks for 15 months beginning in September 1852. Soon after leaving Vancouver, he resigned from the army and did not serve again until the outbreak of the American Civil War. Other notable generals to have served in Vancouver include George B. McClellan, Philip Sheridan, Oliver O. Howard and 1953 Nobel Peace Prize recipient George Marshall.

Army presence in Vancouver was very strong, as the Department of the Columbia built and moved to Vancouver Barracks, which would be the largest Army base in the region until surpassed by Fort Lewis, 120 miles to the north. Pearson Army Field (later Pearson Field Airport) was a key facility and the US Army Signal Corps operated the largest spruce cut-up plant in the world to provide much-needed wood for airplanes. Vancouver became the end point for two ultralong flights from Moscow, USSR over the North Pole. The first of these flights was performed by Valery Chkalov in 1937 . Chkalov was originally scheduled to land at an airstrip in nearby Portland, OR, but redirected at the last minute to Vancouver's Pearson Airfield. Today there is a street named for him in Vancouver.

Separated from Oregon until 1917, when the Interstate Bridge began to replace ferries, Vancouver had three shipyards just downstream which produced ships for World War I before World War II brought an enormous economic boom. An Alcoa aluminum plant opened on September 2, 1940, using inexpensive power from nearby Bonneville Dam. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Henry Kaiser opened a shipyard next to the U.S. Army reserve, which employ as many as 36,000 people by 1944. Operating twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to produce liberty ships, LST's, and "baby flat tops," this influx of shipyard workers to these would boost the population from 18,000 to over 80,000 in just a few months, leading to the creation of the Vancouver Housing Authority and six new cities: Fruit Valley, Fourth Plain Village, Bagley Downs, Ogden Meadows, Burton Homes and McLouglin Heights. Each of these was later incorporated into the city, and are well-known neighborhoods, while the neighboring "shipyard city" of Vanport, Oregon, would be destroyed by the Memorial Day flood of 1948.

In 1956, Willie Nelson moved to Vancouver to begin his musical career, recording "Lumberjack". The single sold fairly well, but did not establish a career. Nelson continued to work as a radio announcer in Vancouver and sing in clubs. He sold a song called "Family Bible" for $50; the song was a hit for Claude Gray in 1960, has been covered widely and is often considered a gospel music classic.

Vancouver has recently experienced conflicts with other Clark County communities because of rapid growth in the area. As a result of urban growth and annexation, Vancouver is often thought of as split between two areas, East and West Vancouver, divided by NE Andresen Road. West Vancouver is home to downtown Vancouver and some of the more historical parts of the city, as well as recent high-density mixed-use development.

More than one-third of the Vancouver urban area's population has spilled into an unincorporated urban area north of its city limits, including the communities of Hazel Dell, Felida, Orchards and Salmon Creek. If county leaders had approved a major annexation plan in 2006, Vancouver would have passed Tacoma and Spokane to become the state's second-largest city.

NOTABLE BUILDINGS

Because of its relatively long age for the region, Vancouver is home to various notable buildings, including the reconstructed Fort Vancouver at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Many are also on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2003 the city was named one of the Register's "Dozen Distinctive Destinations".[

Other notable buildings in Vancouver include:

+ The Covington House at 4201 Main Street, a log cabin and boarding school built in approximately 1848
+ Officers Row, including The Grant House (first house on the Columbia Barracks) and the Queen Anne-style 1866 Marshall House
+ Mother Joseph's Providence Academy, constructed in 1874, where Evergreen Boulevard crosses Interstate 5
+ Saint James Church, whose first mass Roman Catholic mass was celebrated August 16, 1885
+ The Carnegie Library at Sixteenth and Main, which opened on New Year's Eve, 1909, to showcase its unusual electric lights
+ The 1914 Chicago-style U.S. National Bank (now the Heritage Building) at Fifth and Main
+ The 1916 U.S. Post Office at 1211 Daniels Street
+ The vertical-lift Interstate Bridge, which opened on Valentine's Day, 1917, Oregon's 58th anniversary
+ The 1935 art deco telephone exchange building at Eleventh and Washington
+ The 1941 Clark County courthouse, designed by prolific local architect Day Hillborn
+ Smith Tower, a round downtown apartment building for the elderly, built in 1965
+ Slocum House, a 19th century Italianate villa style residence originally built one block south of its current location in Esther Short Park. It was moved to its present location at Esther Short Park in 1966 and now houses a community theatre company.

Woo hoo! I trust that folks have noticed our beloved berg (complete with charismatically kooky mayor) on the cover of the March 21 Willamette Week. Other than getting a few irrelevant facts wrong (the downtown Burgerville was actually the second: it just looks oldest) I thought it was pretty darn funny, snarky and affectionate in all the ways one would expect. Comments?

Clark County Voter Registration

Just a heads-up to the peeps in Clark County (and especially those who have moved within the last few years) that Clark County is cleaning its voter rolls by mailing out new voter registration cards. If you do not receive yours sometime this month, you may have been lost and/or purged, so contact them soon to participate in coming elections. Since the county moved to an all-mail ballot system last summer, a good mailing address is CRUCIAL to voting. Make sure they have yours so that you can participate.

Republican research demonstrates that the fewer people vote the better Republicans do, so it is in their perceived self-interest to make sure that as many people are taken off the voter rolls as possible, especially those who rent or move often, who tend to be lower-income and vote Democratic. I'm no partisan, but as an American such underhanded disenfranchisement strikes me as inherently shitty.

If you have any interest in democracy, please check that you are still properly registered to vote and help remind your family, friends and neighbors to do the same.

More details at http://www.clark.wa.gov/elections or by phone at (360) 397-2345.

Just a note for Tribester in the Couv who may not know of the efforts to start a food co-op (hopefully in the downtown area). Full details are at the web site, but as part of preparing there is a "buyer's club" which pools orders from a wholesaler in Oregon for delivery to Vancouver once monthly. The order is made at the web site with two pickup points. Deadline for the next order is next Tuesday, January 10. More info at http://www.vancouverfood.org/buyers/

Someone in another thread recommended a coffee shop downtown. Anyone know of anything in Salmon Creek or Hazel Dell?

There's a great new coffee shop in downtown Vancouver that just opened last week I think, called "The Coffee Lounge". It serves organic, fair-trade coffee in a really cool, laid back setting. It's on Main Street in the Arts Building (can't remember the address). Anyway, just thought I'd let the locals know about it... :o)

Bird Flu Survival Tactics - How will you survive?

I am looking for tips to survive the up and coming bird flu pandemic. If you have any ideas on how you will survive on a day-to-day basis - (as in how not to catch the bird flu) please jot a note. Any ideas whatsoever. There are no stupid ideas. 1 in 5 people that catch the bird flu will be a statistic and I don't plan on being one of them. How will you shop for food? Travelling? Laundry? Contact with people? Washing hands/clothes, etc. This is not a joke.

Hello everyone!

As some of you know, I'm involved with the Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair, which is happening in Esther Short Park on September 24th. I have volunteered to chair the silent auction, and am looking for donations. Each item donated will have your name (or your business name) clearly advertised on the auction bid lists. All proceeds go to benefit the Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair.

So far, the donations consist of an hand-crocheted afghan, a handmade doily, and a pasta dinner gift basket. I am accepting new items only. They can be handcrafted goods, gift certificates for items or services, etc. I encourage in-kind donations!

You all know I'm an avid volunteer. This is something I really believe in, and I'm asking for your help with this! If you or someone you know could donate for this cause, I'd really appreciate it.

If you wish to donate, please email me at crimsonslumber@hotmail.com for a donation form. Thanks!

Please visit the website at: http://www.vancouverpeaceandjusticefair.org
or the tribe at http://vancouverpjf.tribe.net

Blessings,
Lyra

ALSO, if you would like to be a VENDOR, VOLUNTEER, or SPONSOR, please check out the website! We need MORE VENDORS!!!

Need a Volunteer Coordinator for Vagabond Opera!

Hi All!

I manage - Vagabond Opera - www.vagabondopera.com - and I need some help promoting the band in Vancouver.

I would like a fan or two to be the coordinator for Vancouver - acquiring contacts for press and radio, finding new interesting venues or events Vagabond Opera should perform in, and sell product at the shows - generally be our Vancouver "street team."

In return, you will receive copies of the album, a minimum of two free tix for each show, a percentage of all product sales at the shows (or even retail).

Also, I will randomly select a person from those who respond to this post (you don't have to volunteer) to receive a copy of the album and two tickets to the next show in Vancouver/Portland.

If you have any questions visit www.vagabondopera.com, my phone number is there too.
Arnada Cafe open mics

Ok, gang...

Let's figure out how to improve the quality of the music we hear here. Feathers hosts the open Mic on Tuesday nights, and I think Mark may or may not still be hosting them on Thursdays, (someone correct me if that's wrong) but either way, we really need to put some good musicians on the line up. I know there's more talent in this town than we've seen so far.

Vancouver, rather than Portland

Ok, so why do we all live over here rather than over there? For me, it's the tax base and the school system. Seems that Portland doesn't give schools the priority that Vancouver does, and I'd rather my kids go to a decent school.

So what reasons do you all have?

So, I don't mean to be discriminatory or anything, but I gotta ask....It seems that there are more rednecks in Vancouver than a town this size within this close proximity to a city like Portland really deserves. Could it be true that crossing the river makes you want cowboy boots?

I hope not....

Hey, ya'll...

Clark College is doing a production of "Hair" this spring, and my talented son has landed a part in it. No, they're not doing nudity (this IS still Clark County) but I figured if there was ever a production to beat my friends into seeing, it's this one....
